iPhone SE 4: An iPhone XR to keep the notch alive in 2023

iPhone SE 4

Earlier this year, most of the leaks were pointing to the iPhone SE 3 release with a new design. However, Apple ended up launching the compact iPhone with the very same design as its predecessor. To those unaware, the iPhone SE series has been sticking with the old design of the iPhone lineup. It’s marked by the huge top and bottom bezels and the iconic Touch ID Home Button. Now, for the iPhone SE 4, it seems that the company is finally changing the design.

The iPhone SE 3 was previously thought to come with a notch design. In the end, the device carried the traditional design. Now, it’s up to the iPhone SE 4 to revamp the design of the series. Apparently, it will bring back the concept of the iPhone XR. To those unaware, the iPhone XR was a “cheaper” iPhone model and one of the most successful in the tepid 2018 lineup. Now, leakster Jon Prosser shows us a couple of renders created by Ian Zeibo. They show the iPhone SE 4 with a design that resembles the XR.

The iPhone SE lineup is years behind the regular lineup in terms of design. This year, the iPhone 14 Pro models said goodbye to the notch. In the next year, we expect the punch-hole design to reach the entire lineup. With that in mind, Apple will keep the notch alive with the launch of the iPhone SE 4. We’re talking about the true notch from the iPhone X era. After all, the iPhone 13 series introduced a narrower notch.

iPhone SE 4 – Apple A15, XR design, and goodbye to Touch ID

The new design also means goodbye to the Touch ID. The fingerprint scanner has been alive with the SE series. Now, it seems to be gone. Rumors have been talking about the introduction of an under-screen Touch ID for years. However, this never materialized. That said, we still don’t believe in the Touch ID return with the iPhone 15 series. Not until consistent proof emerges.

The iPhone SE 4 will likely bring the sensors behind the Face ID tech. So that will be the new biometric authentication way. Apple will also bring a hardware upgrade with the new model… a hardware upgrade for the iPhone XR. The last year’s model brings the Apple A15, that’s the same chipset inside the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. Apple says it’s a revamped version. So we expect this upper version to reach the iPhone SE 4. Apple won’t bring the Apple A16 to the cheaper lineup, otherwise, it will put the SE series ahead of the regular iPhone models. Next year, we expect the vanilla iPhone 15 and 15 Plus to bring the Apple A16, while the 15 Pro models will likely use a newer A17.

Continuing on the leaked renders, the new model will bring the camera design from the iPhone XR. It has a single circular protruding snapper with an LED flash sitting below. The phone will come in at least three colors – Midnight, Starlight, and Product RED.

No USB Type-C

Although we may not see much advance in performance, the iPhone SE 4 may compensate in other specs. For example, the new phone may bring more RAM. Giving users extra capabilities for multi-tasking. Moreover, we may see a big battery or perhaps faster charging. For the latter, we’re talking about “Apple fast-charging” and not something on par with other smartphone brands. Apart from these minimal changes, the phone is basically an iPhone XR brought back to life with some 2022-esque specs.

iPhone Renders

Last but not least, the phone may sport a Lightning port. You may know about the new EU rules that require brands to adopt USB Type-C ports on most electronics. When it comes to the smartphone market, this is something that affects Apple more than other brands. The deadline for the change is 2024. However, Apple will go ahead with the iPhone 15 series. When it comes to the iPhone SE 4 the device may keep the old Lightning port for one last time.
