The Switch becomes the 2nd best selling console in history

The Nintendo Switch exceeded the milestone of 122.55 million units sold, but the Japanese company downgraded its expectations after seeing less-than-optimistic results for the current fiscal year.

Nintendo still has many reasons to rejoice, though. Switch outsells Game Boy (118.69 million) and PlayStation 4 in the most recent sales data (117.2 million).

Nintendo Switch sales have achieved a great new milestone

The Switch surpassed the Wii as Nintendo’s best-selling home console of all time in 2018, selling 101.63 million units. It must surpass the 154.02 million sold Nintendo DS in the portable console market. The best-selling console of all time remains (for now) the PlayStation 2 with 155 million units sold.

The Nintendo Switch has sold 994 million games since its release in December 2017, breaking a milestone that no other Nintendo system from Japan has achieved. With 948.7 million games sold, the Nintendo DS came second.

The company reported 1.9% lower sales and 5.8% lower revenue for the first nine months of the most recent fiscal year. Nintendo estimates that it will sell 18 million consoles by March of this year, which is 1 million fewer than anticipated, as a result of the poor performance. In the near future, the company plans to launch the Nintendo Switch Pro model, which was subject to numerous leaks in the past few weeks.

In order to maintain demand and set new sales records, Nintendo plans to take use of its powerful licensing by publishing new games in the near future. So, on May 12, gamers will be able to experience the much awaited The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. In addition to Pikmin 4, Bayonetta Origins will be published in March of next year.
