Motorola’s Triple Threat: Meet the New Moto G 5G, Moto G Stylus, and Edge Plus

Motorola has found its mojo over the last couple of months. This is because the phone manufacturer has been blessing us with some pretty good phones lately.

Motorola refreshed its budget and premium lineup this week by launching three new smartphones. These include the Moto G 5G, Moto G Stylus, and Moto Edge Plus. This article looks at what each of these new Motorola phones offers.

The Motorola Moto G 5G (2023)

We kick-start things with the new Moto G 5 5G (2023). This is Motorola’s affordable phone that is poised to offer a reliable 5G experience. The Moto G 5 5G (2023) has a couple of upgrades over the Moto G 5G 2022 from last year. For starters, this year’s Moto G 5G comes with the Snapdragon 480 Plus.

This is a slight bump in performance over last year’s MediaTek Dimesity 700 chipset. However, Motorola seems to have downgraded the camera setup. The Moto G 5G (2023) gets a 48MP primary camera, a downgrade from last year’s 50MP primary camera.

You also get a downgraded 8MP selfie camera, down from 13MP, and the same 2MP macro vision sensor. For the display, the Moto G 5G comes with the same 6.5, 720p display. We, however, get a nice bump in refresh rate as the screen will now refresh at 120Hz.

Other specs include a 5000mAh battery, 4GB RAM, and 128GB storage. The phone also supports Dolby Atmos. The specs sheet shows this year’s Moto G 5G is similar to the 2022 model.

The Moto G Stylus (2023)

The Moto G Stylus is Motorola’s budget-tier stylus phone. This year’s Moto G Stylus continues to offer good bang for the buck, just like its predecessor, the Moto G Stylus (2022). The G Stylus lives up to its name by featuring a 6.5-inch HD+ screen that refreshes at 90Hz.

You’ll also find a compartment at the bottom of the phone that holds the stylus. Once removed, the stylus prompts a menu with various options for tasks like jotting down a quick note or taking a screenshot.

The G Stylus runs on the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can also add up to 1TB of extra storage via the dedicated microSD card slot. Powering up everything is a 5000mAh battery that supports 15W charging.

For the optics, you get a 50MP primary camera, a 2MP macro camera and an 8MP front-facing camera.

The Moto G Stylus 2023 is perfect for those who prefer a Samsung Galaxy Note-like experience but are on a budget.

Motorola Moto Edge Plus (2023)

The Moto Edge Plus 2023 is Motorola’s latest flagship, featuring Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Motorola also decided to stick with a curved display for the Edge Plus.

Speaking of displays, the Edge Plus features a 6.7 FHD+ pOLED screen. The screen refreshes at an astonishing 165Hz and supports Dolby Vision and Atmos. That cameras compete favourably, on paper at least, with the latest crop of iPhones and the Galaxy S23 lineup.

We get a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultrawide/macro, and a 12MP 2x telephoto lens. This slightly differs from last year’s model, which offered a 2MP depth camera instead of a telephoto. There’s also a 60MP selfie camera at the front.

The Moto Edge Plus (2023) also features a 5,100mAh battery which should last a day. The battery should also fill up fast thanks to the 68W charging speeds. And unlike most flagship phones, Motorola still includes a charging brick in the box.

Price and availability

The Moto G 5G and Moto G Stylus will go for $249 and $199, respectively. On the other hand, the Moto Edge Plus will have a starting price point of $799. The Moto G Stylus is set to hit shelves on May 5 at Best Buy, Amazon, Cricket Wireless, and Straight Talk.

The Motorola Edge Plus (2023) opens for pre-orders on May 19 and will be available for sale on May 25. Carrier availability for the Edge Plus will be through Spectrum Mobile and Boost Mobile. The Moto G 5G will arrive on May 25 at unlocked retailers like Best Buy and Amazon.
